Gender Equity Nothing More Than A Myth

The Shriver Report reveals persistent wage gap

Released this week, The Shriver Report reveals that American women continue to face economic hardship despite cultural claims of gender equity. Co-authored by journalist Maria Shriver, the report finds 1 in 3 American women—that’s 42 million women—either already live below the poverty line or are at the “brink of poverty,” making $47,000 a year or less for a family of four. Although more women graduate from higher education institutions than men, the average woman still makes 77 cents to every man’s dollar. The report also includes an article written by singer and newly-minted gender equality spokesperson Beyonce Carter-Knowles, citing the report’s findings as evidence that gender equity remains a myth. “Men have to demand that their wives, daughters, mothers, and sisters earn more—commensurate with their qualifications and not their gender,” Knowles-Carter writes. “Equality will be achieved when men and women are granted equal pay and equal respect.”
