Michelle Obama Pays Tribute to Jackie Robinson’s Widow

First lady says she is ‘totally in awe of’ 90-year-old Rachel Robinson.

Being somebody Michelle Obama is “totally in awe of” is especially an honor. Rachel Robinson, the 90-year-old widow of baseball pioneer Jackie Robinson, was honored by the first lady on Tuesday. In an emotional tribute after seeing the movie 42, Obama, who seemed close to tears during parts of her speech, said, “This is what a beautiful woman looks like.” Obama said she and her husband were “very moved” after watching the film, and they asked themselves “you’re left asking yourself, how on earth did they do it? How did they endure such bigotry?” When asked her opinion about current race relations, Rachel Robinson cautioned against thinking the fight is over. “We have made great social progress in America, but we still have lots of work to do. We’re not there yet,” Robinson said. In a lighter moment, Obama also mentioned 42’s co-star Harrison Ford, with the first lady saying, “I want to thank Harrison Ford … You trip because I’m here? I’m tripping out because he’s here.”
