Japanese Students Invent ‘Girlfriend Coat’
Women ... who needs them, right? Japanese engineering students are certainly hoping to cash in on that old stereotype with the creation of a “girlfriend coat,” which they claim hugs you and whispers in your ear like your girlfriend would. Or rather like men's fantasies of a girlfriend, since not many women are available just for hugging and whispering the words you want to hear in your ear. The Riajyuu coat has two robotic pincers controlled by a motor at the back of the coat that will give you a hug—and then whispers pre-recorded messages such as “I am sorry, were you waiting?” or “Watch your back!” But before you start worrying your boyfriend will dump you for a coat that actually apologizes for being late, the blog Kotaku, the coat appears to be somewhat tongue in cheek and not entirely serious—or possibly for men whose girlfriends are always late and never apologizing. The coat is not available to be sold in stores, so don’t get your hopes yet for those sweet nothings to be whispered in your ear, loney single men.
