Husband Captures Wife’s Battle With Breast Cancer
The New York Daily News published a heartrending story this weekend about Jennifer Merendino, a New York woman who fought against two rounds of breast cancer before the disease finally claimed her life in December 2011. Merendino’s journey was captured by her photographer husband, Angelo, in an intimate series called “The Battle We Didn’t Choose. From a photo of the healthy, happy couple drinking beer on the stoop of their first apartment, through hair loss and brain radiation treatments, the poignant black-and-white images show both the seriousness of the disease and Merendino’s luminous magnetism. “I think she would be proud that we turned something so upsetting into something that’s full of love, and that is inspiring others,” Angelo told the Daily News. “That’s who she was. She made the most of situations.” He is now reportedly editing the photos into a book with the help of The New Yorker’s photography director.
