TMZ Gets Classy, Judges Stars’ Pregnancy Weight Gains

Compliments Kate Middleton for staying small, slams Kim Kardashian and Jessica Simpson for looking larger.

Oh TMZ, this is not good territory to wade into. If you back away slowly, you may have some female readers left. The celebrity gossip blog decided on Tuesday to compare the weight Kate Middleton has gained to the weight Kim Kardashian and Jessica Simpson have gained. The post leads off with this (read on at your own risk): “If pregnant women were capable of jealousy, one would say Kim Kardashian and Jessica Simpson might be a little covetous of Kate Middleton’s physique—‘cause they’re all due around the same time and, well, one of these things is not like the other.” And then there are photos comparing the three women.

Beyond the meanness—not to mention sexism—of judging a pregnant woman on her weight gain, the post shows an appalling lack of knowledge about pregnancy weight gain. There’s no author, so it’s impossible to know if it was written by a man or woman (although we can probably guess which), but as Jezebel’s Elissa Strauss points out, there is a real cluelessness that even women have about knowing how profound the changes their bodies will go through—and how even maternity clothes won’t fit right. But by all means, let’s compare three women who don’t even live in the same country, with different body types and different-sized babies. Stay classy, TMZ.
