No Girls Allowed
By 2013, there are plenty of women out there to hold the distinction “First Female [insert title here].” But many frontiers have yet to be settled. A blog started this month, Boys Clubs, seeks to document those “corners of the world where women have yet to tread.” The groups range from the serious and obvious (every American president) to the more obscure and less consequential (every author in last week’s issue of The New Yorker). Some of these are single-factor groups, and some are combinations of similar categories (“Every editor of the Financial Times, every editor of The Economist, every editor of The Wall Street Journal, every director general of the BBC, every editor of TIME magazine, ever”). All are accompanied by images that drive home the clubs’ overwhelming maleness—not to mention whiteness.
