Saudi Arabian Group Releases Anti-Domestic Violence Campaign

In a new campaign targeted at ending domestic violence, a Saudi Arabian group has launched advertisements featuring a woman clad in the full Islamic garb known as a niqab—with a black eye. Domestic violence is a serious problem in Saudi Arabia—especially since women are classified under law as wards of male guardians and subject to the rules of the guardians. The “No More Abuse” campaign by the King Khalid Foundation aims to reform the country’s domestic violence record, with a statement on its website that “the phenomenon of battered women in Saudi Arabia is much greater than is apparent on the surface” and that it is a “phenomenon found in the dark.”
