Abercrombie Doesn’t Want ‘Larger People’ Shopping There

Store doesn’t even offer XXL or XL sizes for women.

Remember that scene in Mean Girls when a snotty salesclerk told Regina Geroge (Rachel McAdams) that the store carried only “sizes 1, 3, or 5”? Welcome to the real-life version. Despite other clothing companies adjusting to the growing waistlines of teenagers, Abercrombie & Fitch apparently wants to appeal only to the “thin” set. CEO Mike Jeffries “doesn’t want larger people shopping in his store, he wants thin and beautiful people,” says Robin Lewis, co-author of The New Rules of Retail and CEO of newsletter The Robin Report. In fact, the store doesn’t carry XXL or even XL sizes for women—and it carries those men’s sizes only to market to beefy football players. Sure, that’s not a double standard or anything.
