Edinburgh Fringe Festival to Debut Play on India Gang-Rape Victim
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is one of the hottest theater tickets each summer, and one director plans to take advantage of the venue to issue a call to arms against sexual violence against women. Yael Farber—whose play Mies Julie, a South African rendition of August Strindberg’s famous Miss Julie, won the Fringe First Award last year and is currently on an international tour—has assembled an all-Indian cast to perform a play based on the horrific gang rape and murder of a student on a Delhi bus last December. Called Nirbhaya, after the victim’s nickname (meaning “The Fearless One”), it will feature personal testimony from the actors about sexual violence and harassment. According to The Guardian, the play was originally slated for 2014, but its creators felt that the topic was so relevant this year that they decided to fast-track the production.
