Experts Advise Caution on Test for Breast Cancer

Evidence suggests that the $3,000 BRCA test may be more trouble than it's worth.

Women are advised to take a long, hard look at the realities of the BRCA test before following Angelina Jolie’s example. Last week, the actress revealed her decision to take the cancer-screening test and her subsequent decision to undergo a double mastectomy. For Jolie, who was met with a staggering 87 percent chance of developing breast cancer, the test can be lifesaving, but circumstances are different for the majority of women who have lower chances, a New York Times editorial suggested. Even women whose chances are high “should take a cautious approach,” and look into counseling and health-screening measures.
