Oman Proposes Ban on Veils
A garment that may impair vision can pose a risk on the road? Who knew? Most people, including Oman's lawmakers. Although women in the country traditionally wear face veils called niqabs even when driving, Oman is proposing that they unveil (only while driving) or risk a traffic violation. The Omani delegate allegedly made the proposal to the Gulf Cooperation Council police traffic department heads, citing that the garment restricts vision and poses a hazard. Police chiefs later met in Jidda, Saudi Arabia, to discuss traffic laws. Immediate action seems unlikely, though: after all, women are still forbidden from driving in Saudi Arabia.
