IS THIS A JOKE?
Female Comics ‘Bother’ Jerry Lewis
No one’s laughing, Jerry. When asked to name his favorite female comics, 87-year-old comedian Jerry Lewis said, “I don’t have any”—only after listing Cary Grant and Burt Reynolds. Lewis made the remarks at the Cannes Film Festival after being asked about funny ladies like Melissa McCarthy and Sarah Silverman. He went on to say: “I can’t see women doing that. It bothers me … I cannot sit and watch a lady diminish her qualities to the lowest common denominator.” Lewis made headlines in 1998 when he said that he has trouble with the notion of would-be mothers as comedians.
