Congressional Women’s Tough Stance on Military Sexual Assault

Senator Gillibrand: Problem is ‘undermining’ armed forces.

Women in Congress have taken on the epidemic of sexual assault in the military, and they are not backing down. In a hearing earlier this month, New York Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand told  the secretary of the Air Force that sexual assault is “undermining the credibility of the greatest military force in the world.” She also blasted Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, the chief of staff at the Air Force, for his comments that the “hook-up culture” is partly to blame. She’s not the only female lawmaker to be taking action: six other senators have all taken a stand, and the DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Democratic representative from Florida, has thrown her support behind legislation such as Gillibrand’s.
