INSURANCE CHANGE

Bill Would Cover Fertility Treatment for Sick

Insurance companies, if legislation passes, insure for such therapies for patients with cancer.

California leaders met recently to advance a bill requiring insurance companies to cover fertility-preservation procedures for patients with cancer or other serious diseases. Insurers would have to cover egg-extraction and sperm-freezing methods, which can cost up to $15,000, before a patient’s disease can inhibit fertility. The bill will now go to the state Senate for consideration. If signed into law, AB912 would be the first of its kind.
