#HitHer Tackles Domestic Violence in Saudi Arabia
A new Twitter campaign is gaining traction in Saudi Arabia to combat domestic violence against women. The campaign uses the hashtag #hither and features young Saudis, both men and women, using their own words to discourage domestic violence and daring men to hit women. Organized by a group of young Saudis with sponsorship from music-management agency Libra Productions, the campaign has received an outpouring of positive responses, especially from men. The country undertook its first campaign to end domestic violence recently, releasing an ad last month featuring a woman in a niqab with a black eye. Under Saudi law, women are still considered wards of male guardians and subject to their rules—making it nearly impossible to report domestic violence.
