Egypt To Air All-Male TV Show

Islamic channel wants 'cleaner version of art.'

No actresses need apply. Egypt is about to launch the first all-male soap opera. The show, where both the cast and crew will be entirely male, is set to air during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan on the satellite channel Al-Hafez. The show’s director, Wagdy El-Araby, defended it by saying, “We’re making art and drama without angering God or violating Islamic rules.” This trend follows the rise of ultra-conservative Muslims in Egypt since the Muslim Brotherhood came to power. Al-Araby argues that it is simply time for, “a cleaner version of art.” But was it just to counter last year's launch of Egypt's Maria TV, which is run solely by fully veiled women?
