Streisand Denounces Treatment of Women
Singer and actress Barbra Streisand touched on the issue of Jewish religious practices that marginalize women Monday in Israel. She spoke at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where she received an honorary doctorate, and discussed how the culture of Orthodox Judaism can sometimes be limiting for women. (The tradition only allows men to wear prayer shawls and handle Torah scrolls, and men and women must worship separately.) “Repairs are being made, and that’s very good,” Streisand said in her first visit to Israel since 1984. Babs ended by assuring Israel and the university of her support.
