Rise in Women of Color on TV

Networks might finally be getting the point.

Slowly but surely, the TV culture is evolving. With Scandal’s Olive Pope, a black female lead, networks are finally beginning to show a new side. TV’s history of representation has been rough: before Pope the last black woman in a leading role was Teresa Graves on Get Christie Love! ... in 1974. But now, with Scandal and the new Mindy Project (whose star, Mindy Kaling, is of Indian descent), women of color are playing larger roles, more often. Even reality shows are growing the diversity of their casts, from Basketball Wives to The Real Housewives franchise. Let’s just hope this degree of change continues.
