Texas GOP Propoes Stricter Abortion Bill

Would ban procedure after six weeks.

The abortion debate has hardly died down in Texas, despite the passage of a bill that will effectively shut down most of the state's clincs. The state’s Republicans have proposed a “fetal heartbeat” ban, which could make abortion illegal after six weeks—despite that most women, as Slate reported, don’t even know they’re pregnant at that time. In North Dakota—previously the only state with the six-week rule, which was supposed to go into effect August 1—a federal judge blocked the bill on Monday. Slate reported the new Texas bill will “face harsh criticism and fierce opposition from the thousands of Texans rallying against the Republican-controlled Legislature’s efforts to eliminate access of safe abortion care in the state.”
