Women Win Big in ‘Asian Nobel’
The Ramon Magsaysay awards, honoring those who improve Asia's communities, and considered the continent's answer to the Nobel, have selected their winners for 2013. Among the recipients is Habiba Sarabi, the first and only female governor of an Afghan province, who has improved education (especially for girls) as well as local government functionality. Also recognized was Lahpai Seng Raw, who has been a vital force in rebuilding Burma after ethnic conflict. Human trafficking also took the spotlight with an award for Shakti Samuha (Power Group), a Nepalese NGO dedicated to eradicating the problem. A Filipino medical researcher and the Indonesian Corruption Erradication Commission rounded out the awards.
