South Korea’s Marriage Plot

The country is trying some unusual matchmaking methods.

Korean 20-somethings are single and reluctant to mingle. In an attempt to facilitate romance, the South Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare has begun hosting “dating parties” to appeal to young adults who are less comfortable with old-school formal matchmaking but still shy away from striking up relationships with strangers. Young women who have established themselves in the workforce are reluctant to give up their careers, thus contributing to a low birthrate of 1.15 children per woman (compared with 1.9 in the U.S.). Other efforts have included a blind-date flash mob and company-sponsored dating profiles for employees.
