How Spoons Can Save At-Risk Girls

Set off metal detectors when traveling to a forced marriage.

Utensils are for more than just eating. British-based charity Karma Nirvana has a unique way to help women being forced into marriages abroad. It advises young women to hide spoons in their underwear to set off metal detectors in airports, thereby giving them a chance to alert their situation to authorities. Officials say the highest number of women trafficked occurs during school holidays. Estimates of forced marriage range from 1,500 to 5,000 women—with more than a third thought to be under age 16.
