Abortion Since Akin
Everyone remembers when former U.S. representative Todd Akin of Missouri said, “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” right? And we’ve moved on. Right? Well, sort of. The National Women’s Law Center released a new report, Shut That Whole Thing Down: A Survey of Abortion Restrictions Even in Cases of Rape to track abortion legislation in Congress so far this year. It found that 86 percent of abortion restrictions that state legislators introduced apply to a woman who became pregnant due to rape. “These restrictions are an insult to women and their health needs,” says NWLC Co-President Marcia D. Greenberger.
