Life Magazine’s First Female Editor Dies

Judith Glassman Daniels also started a magazine for businesswomen.

Judith Glassman Daniels, who was Life magazine’s top first female editor in chief, has died from stomach cancer at age 74. She had a long and successful publishing career, working for The Village Voice, New York magazine, Time Inc., and Condé Nast. Daniels also created a magazine for businesswomen called Savvy and helped found the Women’s Media Group. “She was thinking about the issues facing successful professional women long before they were trendy, like work-life balance and the pressure that women face to get ideas heard,” says John MacMillan, editorial director at Smith College. She retired to Maine with her husband in 2004.
