Kurdish Men Politicize Fashion

They don drag to address region’s gender inequality.

For Kurdish men, feminism is in style. Last April, activists Masoud Fathi and Dler Kamangar launched Kurd Men for Equality, a Facebook campaign in which men don traditional Kurdish female clothing. The campaign, which serves to champion feminism and challenge the Iranian regime, took off after Iranian courts sentenced a man convicted of domestic abuse to dress in women’s wear. It has since garnered more than 17,000 Facebook likes. As Fathi says, “Women are part of our personality, our character. If we oppress one part of our character, we oppress ourselves.”
