The Muslim World’s Pageant
This isn’t the Miss America pageant or the Miss World competition—the winner got a “crown of modesty” and a paid trip to Mecca. The World Muslimah, held Wednesday, is the Muslim world’s version of a beauty pageant. Contestants discussed Islamic morals and finance while wearing glittering head-to-toe dresses, sparkling high heels, and headscarves, but the contest was still full of pageantry fanfare. Miss Nigeria Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola dropped to her knees and cried when she won. The event was held in Bali, Indonesia, where the Miss World pageant, which some Muslims have labeled as “pornographic,” will also take place this week.
