Postpartum Depression Gets Attention
A high-speed chase yesterday at Capitol Hill left one woman dead and many questions unanswered. Miriam Carey’s family says she was on medication for an unspecified mental illness and that she suffered from postpartum depression after giving birth to her now 1-year-old child. “Dr. Igor Galynker, director of the Family Center for Bipolar Disorder at Beth Israel Medical Center of the Mount Sinai Health System in New York City, said that going by news reports, Carey ‘most likely’ had underlying biopolar disorder or schizophrenia,” according to ABC News. Postpartum symptoms usually start within four weeks of giving birth, but there’s really no timeline of when they end.
