El Salvador Jails Women After Miscarriages
In the latest front in El Salvador’s hard-line war on abortion, women who seek treatment for miscarriages are as likely to find themselves charged with murder as to be given the medical care they need. In one recent case, a 19-year-old girl was arrested for the murder of her unborn fetus after showing up at her local hospital suffering from crippling abdominal pain and heavy bleeding. Officials said it was impossible to distinguish between the miscarriage and a medically induced abortion, so she was charged of having intentionally terminated the pregnancy. In a similar case last year, a woman who miscarried was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
