Texas Abortion Law Goes to Supreme Court
Abortion providers in Texas called on the Supreme Court this morning to reinstate an injunction on the state’s draconian new anti-abortion bill, which would shutter clinics that lack hospital admitting privileges. After the bill passed in this summer—despite State Sen. Wendy Davis’s marathon 12-hour filibuster—U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel granted an injunction delaying its enforcement. But a 3-judge panel on the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals lifted the injunction on Thursday night, allowing Texas to begin enforcing the new law and forcing clinics to turn away women whose procedures had already been scheduled.
