Should Women Play More “Feminine” Sports?

UK sports minister receives backlash after comments.

During this winter’s Olympic Games, millions of people have experienced the thrill of watching athletes of all nationalities, races, and genders pursue their athletic passion and compete for the gold. But how many people were paying attention to their femininity? UK Sports Minister Helen Grant is in hot water recently for her response to a question wondering why there are over a million more men playing sports in the U.K. than women. At an event at the YMCA, Grant said, "There are some wonderful sports which you can do and perform to a very high level and I think those participating look absolutely radiant and very feminine such as ballet, gymnastics, cheerleading and even roller-skating." Good thing all the British women worried about their radiance mid-athletic competition can now let a a sigh of relief and cheer from the bleachers instead. Grant later tweeted that she was merely “making the point that there is a sport or type of physical activity out there for all women.”
