A Middle School’s Sexist Dress Code

Girls protest that the new policy places blame on their bodies.

Do tight pants on girls lower boys' test scores? The administration of Haven Middle School in Evanston, IL seems to think so. Following the discriminatory logic that young girl's bodies serve as distractions, the school has banned its female students from wearing leggings or yoga pants, lest they disturb their male peers. More than 500 students have signed a petition in protest, pointing out that the ban puts the burden of "distraction" on girls. Parents have chimed in, too. "This kind of message lands itself squarely on a continuum that blames girls and women for assault by men,” one parent wrote. “It also sends the message to boys that their behaviors are excusable, or understandable given what the girls are wearing … We really hope that you will consider the impact of these policies and how they contribute to rape culture.”
