Girls Scouts and Cookies May Be Inextricable but Maybe It’s Time for a Change.

Even as office (and home) kitchens around the country are piling up with boxes of Thin Mints and Samoas, some health experts are wondering if the century old institution needs re-thinking. Pointing to the nation’s obesity epidemic – and the cookies’ high carbs and trans fat ingredients – they wonder if young entrepreneurs would better serve the common good by selling a more healthy treat. Girl Scout leaders defend the tradition by pointing out that the cookies are seasonal and meant to be enjoyed in moderation.  True but: consider the overwhelming number of “seasonal” treats that Americans enjoy and the reality that nobody eats their Tagalongs in moderation.
