NRA Pissed Off the Wrong Nerd Genius

Billionaire Michael Bloomberg already had the gun lobby in his sights. Now Bill Gates is donating $1 million for universal background checks—and there’s more where that came from.

Somewhere in a large glass tower in Northern Virginia, there’s a guy who runs guns with a French name having a bad day. With good reason.

It was reported Monday that Bill Gates, Microsoft co-founder and incredibly wealthy guy, and with his wife, Melinda, have given $1 million to Initiative 594 in Washington state. The ballot initiative, if passed by voters on November 4 (and it currently enjoys overwhelming support), will require universal background checks for all firearm purchases in the state.

    Fathers of Daughters More Generous

    Than businessmen who have sons.

Daddy’s little girl can soften his heart—and pad his employees’ wallets. Researchers from Aalborg University, the University of Maryland, and Columbia Business School found some interesting correlations between businessmen and their families after studying major Danish companies between 1996 and 2006. In general, a male CEO pays his employees less when he becomes a father, but not when his child is a girl. And when a CEO lowers wages, female employees are affected less so than their male counterparts. In a New York Times op-ed, University of Pennsylvania professor Adam Grant used Bill Gates as an example: Gates became one of America’s most generous philanthropists only after he and his wife, Melinda, gave birth to their first daughter.
