    Fathers of Daughters More Generous

    Than businessmen who have sons.

    Daddy’s little girl can soften his heart—and pad his employees’ wallets. Researchers from Aalborg University, the University of Maryland, and Columbia Business School found some interesting correlations between businessmen and their families after studying major Danish companies between 1996 and 2006. In general, a male CEO pays his employees less when he becomes a father, but not when his child is a girl. And when a CEO lowers wages, female employees are affected less so than their male counterparts. In a New York Times op-ed, University of Pennsylvania professor Adam Grant used Bill Gates as an example: Gates became one of America’s most generous philanthropists only after he and his wife, Melinda, gave birth to their first daughter.
