    Pregnant 11-Year-Old Praised for ‘Maturity’

    Chilean president lambasted for comments.

¿Por qué, Chile? The country’s president, Sebastián Piñera, lauded an 11-year-old pregnant girl after she went on TV to give an interview about keeping her child. Even though her mother’s partner admitted to raping the girl, Chilean officials refused to budge on the country’s abortion ban. “She’s 14 weeks pregnant, and yesterday she surprised us all with words showing depth and maturity, when she said that, despite the pain caused by the man who raped her, she wanted to have and take care of her baby,” Piñera said. He instructed the health minister to personally look after the girl. His comments were harshly criticized as they circulated on social media. In an interview that obscured her face, the girl said, “It will be like having a doll in my arms. I’m going to love the baby very much, even though it comes from that man who hurt me.”

Pregnant Girl, 11, Denied Abortion in Chile

Allegedly a victim of rape by her mother’s partner.

The U.S. isn't the only place where abortion debates are raging. In Chile, the case of a pregnant 11-year-old girl has ignited the fury of many Chileans upset that the pregnancy cannot be ended—although the girl was allegedly raped repeatedly over the course of two years by her mother's partner and is now 14 weeks pregnant. Although the pregnancy is extremely high-risk for both the girl and the fetus, abortions in the socially conservative country have been outlawed for decades, even for medical reasons. The Chilean senate rejected three bills to ease restrictions on abortion last year.
