Funding squeezed for women, infants, and children.
The government shutdown means that the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children—also known as WIC—may see its funding in jeopardy. WIC supplies 9 million low-income women and children with healthy-food vouchers, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support. As of Tuesday, only Utah has shuttered its WIC program for new clients, but president of the National WIC Association Douglas Greenaway says more states will suffer as money runs out.
