Women have been regaining jobs more slowly than men in the economic recovery, despite having fared better in the earlier part of the recession, economic data released Friday revealed. The recession from 2007-2009 was dubbed the “man-cession” because men lost jobs at a higher rate than women, but data from 2010 reveals that women have not been as quick to recover the jobs they lost earlier. The unemployment rate for men was 10.4 percent last year and has since dropped to 9.4 percent in April. But the women’s unemployment rate remained almost the same, at 8.6 percent last year and 8.4 percent in April. Women are suffering in part because they hold a larger number of government jobs—which are on the chopping block now.
