Archaeologists say they have discovered the world’s oldest tools—ones that predate the previous record holders by 700,000 years. The 3.3 million-year-old artifacts, found near Kenya's Lake Turkana, are believed to have been knapped—a practice that involves hitting stones against one another to make a sharp edge—by Australopithecus or Kenyanthropus, the ancestors of Homo sapiens. The discovery appears to confirm that bones with apparent cut marks found in the area in 2010 did indeed indicate the use of tools.
