Not just for bloopers anymore: YouTube is planning a major movie-on-demand service. While the Google-owned website has offered movie rentals for some time, it now has a deal in place with major studios including Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Bros., Universal, and Lionsgate. Paramount, Fox, and Disney, however, have declined to join. All of the major studios have a deal with Apple, whose iTunes figures to be YouTube’s biggest competition. The YouTube service will allow users to purchase movie rentals transitionally rather than by a subscription.
