The founder of SantaCon has been hit with federal wire fraud charges after prosecutors say he turned a supposedly charitable holiday tradition into his own personal piggy bank. Pildes, who created the booze filled December bar crawl where crowds dress as Santa and rampage through New York City, allegedly funneled more than $1 million in donations meant for charity, according to the indictment. The events, marketed as a charitable Santa convention and registered as a 501(c)(3), raised nearly $3 million over the last five years. But prosecutors say only a “small fraction” ever reached actual charities. Instead, a Manhattan federal indictment accuses Pildes of funneling more than half the funds into a personal slush fund “to finance various personal ventures.” Those endeavors reportedly included concert tickets, luxury restaurant tabs, and vacations to Hawaii, Las Vegas, and Vail—along with renovations to a lakefront property in New Jersey and the purchase of a high-end vehicle. Pildes is expected back in court on Wednesday as the case moves forward, according to ABC. He has not issued a plea yet in the case.

Latinos in key battleground states have decisively turned against President Donald Trump, a damning new poll has revealed.

Trump, 79, is viewed as a “significant electoral liability” among Latino voters across Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin in the November midterm elections, according to a poll conducted by Somos Votantes, the largest independent Latino civic engagement organization in the country, and Global Strategy Group.

The survey, released on Monday, found the president at record lows among Latino voters, with his personal favorability at -24 points across the states surveyed. Trump’s job approval rating fell even further (net -26), while his handling of the economy received its worst marks yet, (net -30).

The U.S. Navy admitted that it lost a $240 million spy drone during fighting in Iran, according to a new report.

It’s the first time an MQ-4C Triton unmanned aerial vehicle is known to have been lost since they were introduced into service in 2018. The drone was listed in a new naval report on aviation “mishaps” as having “crashed” on April 9, with the location of the accident withheld.

The crash marks just the latest entry on the ever-growing tab for President Trump’s war in Iran, which is thought to already stand in the tens of billions before any impact on the U.S. economy is considered.

President Donald Trump has threatened to renege on a favorable trade deal with the U.K., after the country’s leader refused to back his war in Iran.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer initially got into Trump’s crosshairs when he refused to let U.S. war planes use British bases in Cyprus, an island in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Syria and Lebanon. Trump’s apparent contempt for Starmer then deepened when the former lawyer refused to help with a U.S. Navy blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump was clearly still stewing over being rejected by Starmer twice when Sky News reporter Mark Stone called his cellphone. In the resulting interview, published Wednesday, Trump threatened to backtrack on the trade deal struck with the U.K. in the wake of his “Liberation Day” blitz last April.

Harry Enten, 38, warned on tax day that Trump’s “big, beautiful” megabill has cost him favor with a growing number of Americans over his handling of taxes.

A Fox News poll conducted in late March found that the 79-year-old president’s approval rating on taxes is 28 points underwater, with 64 percent of Americans disapproving and only 36 percent approving. Real Housewives of Miami star Lisa Hochstein turned herself in to a Miami jail on Wednesday, following charges of illegally spying on her ex-husband. Prosecutors allege that Hochstein, 43, “unlawfully and intentionally” intercepted, or attempted to intercept, wire, oral, or electronic communications involving former husband Lenny Hochstein, 59, and others he spoke with. The reality star’s lawyer, Jayne Weintraub, told TMZ that she “has nothing to hide” and that her surrender was arranged in advance with authorities. Lisa’s ex-boyfriend, Jody Glidden, 51, had been arrested earlier on Sunday on the same charge. Both are accused of attempting to intercept communications during the period from March 12, 2023, to March 31, 2023, according to court documents. Lenny Hochstein alleged his wife of 13 years planted a listening device under his vehicle to monitor his calls during a turbulent divorce that was finalized in November 2024. Throughout the proceedings, both sides accused each other of infidelity and abuse, with Lenny also suing Lisa for defamation in December 2023. Lisa Hochstein and Jody Glidden’s lawyers told Page Six that the current legal escalation is “part of a contentious divorce proceeding and does not belong in criminal court.” The Daily Beast has reached out to representation for all parties for comment.

Panicked U.S. hotels are slashing room rates for the World Cup amid a demand shortfall, exacerbated by what executives believe is being driven by a surge in anti-American sentiment.

Industry executives had hopes that FIFA’s World Cup would revive last year’s slump in travel to the country. Last year, FIFA projected that millions of international visitors would give the U.S. a $30.5 billion economic boost.

But that demand hasn’t materialized, forcing FIFA to begin cancelling tens of thousands of reserved rooms in host cities across the country. Eleven U.S. cities will be hosting matches during the World Cup, scheduled from June 11 through July 19.

A Chinese man has been jailed for trying to smuggle thousands of live ants out of Kenya in his luggage. Zhang Kequn was arrested in March at Nairobi’s main international airport while trying to leave with more than 2,200 live garden ants in plastic containers. The defendant was trying to capitalize on a large market in countries such as China, where ants are kept as pets and people are willing to pay for sprawling colonies to study their behavior, reported Reuters. Zhang initially denied trying to smuggle the ants, but later pleaded guilty to charges including dealing in live ‌wildlife ⁠species. He was given a 12-month jail term and a fine of 1 million shillings ($7,746). The Kenyan court gave the Chinese national such a heavy punishment in order to try to deter further ant-trafficking in the country. “Noting the increasing and rising cases of dealing in large quantities of garden ants and the negative ecological side effects of massive harvesting, there is a need for ​a stiff deterrent,” ​magistrate Irene Gichobi ⁠said. Zhang’s lawyer said he would ​appeal against his sentence. A Kenyan man accused of supplying the ants to Zhang previously pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been asked to investigate after a large block of dirty ice crashed through the roof of a home in Whittier, California. It narrowly missed a resident, left a hole in the ceiling, and scattered debris across the room. The source of the ice remains under investigation, but homeowner Thania Magana told NBC4 she believes it may have fallen from an aircraft passing overhead around 11:18 a.m., when flight data shows a plane was in the area. Inside the home, chunks of brown and white ice were left strewn across the floor and furniture. Magana said the tenant had briefly left the room just minutes before the impact. “I keep replaying it and just thinking of the what if. The first thing that comes to mind is that he probably wouldn’t be here with us,” she said. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn urged a formal inquiry. “While such incidents are rare, the potential consequences are extremely serious,” Hahn wrote. “Whether the material originated from aircraft systems, waste leakage, or another source, this event raises important concerns about aviation safety over densely populated communities in Los Angeles County.”

Specialist cadaver dogs are being deployed from the U.S. to the Bahamas to help find missing mom Lynette Hooker. The 55-year-old American fell overboard in a dinghy in early April as she and her 58-year-old husband Brian Hooker headed toward their yacht from land. Speaking to ABC News, assistant commissioner of the ​Royal Bahamas Police, Advardo Dames, said the K-9 team is from the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard has been helping with the search since its early stages, with its dogs set to be deployed around Hope Town on Wednesday morning. Mr. Hooker was arrested four days after his wife’s disappearance, but was released on Monday without charges. He has since said his “sole focus” was finding his wife, “no matter how likely or unlikely that is.” Speaking to ABC, he added that following his release, he planned to “go back to the boat, and then hire or beg people to help me go find some areas to search.”

Police in Australia are investigating allegations that Katy Perry sexually assaulted actress and model Ruby Rose. The Orange Is The New Black star alleged on social media that the pop singer assaulted her at a Melbourne nightclub in 2010. In a follow-up Threads post, Rose said that she has finalized her report and therefore can “no longer able to comment, repost, or talk publicly” about the case. In a statement, Victoria Police confirmed that it was investigating an allegation of historical sexual assault that occurred in Melbourne in 2010. Perry denied the allegations against her as “categorically false” and “dangerous, reckless lies.” In a statement via her representatives, Perry added: “Ms. Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named.” Rose made the claims against Perry in an unrelated post about the pop star’s reaction to Justin Bieber’s set at Coachella. “Katy Perry sexual assaulted me at spice market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a s--t what she thinks,” Rose wrote. The 40-year-old added she could now “start the healing process” after coming forward with the allegations.

During a sparsely attended Turning Point USA event at Akins Ford Arena in Athens, Georgia, on Tuesday, Vance, 41, appeared to try to woo the more conspiratorial members of the crowd who are still frustrated over the Trump administration’s handling of the Epstein files. It was perhaps a good chance for Vance to score points for a potential 2028 White House run after it emerged earlier this week that he ranks as the least popular VP in modern history.

During a Q&A session, he was asked for his stance on whether a “formal investigation” should be opened to check if the Justice Department shielded any powerful figures who were implicated in the Epstein files. The mystery Kansas City man bagged a $242,000 Show Me Cash Prize in a draw on March 26, having already netted $200,000 before. “The first time I won, I said I’d never win it again,” he said, according to a news release from MOLottery. “I continued to play but only when the jackpot got over $200,000.” The lottery firm revealed that he’d won the cash after buying a ticket that matched all five of that night’s numbers, 17, 20, 25, 30, and 39. “I said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me!’” he said. “I couldn’t believe I won the first time. A 25-year-old American YouTuber has been sentenced to six months in prison in South Korea for desecrating a statue dedicated to women forced into sexual slavery during World War II. Johnny Somali, whose real name is Ramsey Khalil Ismael, specializes in producing offensive “rage bait” content designed to upset viewers. He was arrested in 2024 for posting a video of himself kissing the “Statue of Peace,” a bronze monument commemorating the World War II-era “comfort women” abused by the Japanese military. He later posted a video apologizing for the stunt and saying he didn’t know the monument’s significance. He was convicted on Wednesday in Seoul of obstructing business and distributing sexual deepfakes. The conviction apparently stemmed from various incidents, with the court noting that Somali had repeatedly committed crimes to make money on YouTube, local media reported. At some point, his channel was deactivated. “I’m remorseful, I’m sorry for my crimes,” he told the court.

CCTV footage of the moment a school principal tackles a gunman has been released. Kirk Moore reacted quickly when former student and suspected gunman Victor Hawkins walked into Pauls Valley High School in Oklahoma on April 7. Footage from the incident shows Moore, who has been teaching for 35 years, charging down the 20-year-old, despite the gun being pointed in the direction of the principal. Moore holds him down before another staff member arrives and removes the gun from his hand. Moore was shot in the leg during the skirmish and was rushed to the hospital. He is expected to fully recover. “I mean, he’s a hero,” student William Harris said. Pauls Valley Public Schools Superintendent Brett Knight agreed. “I know the word gets thrown around quite a bit, but he is a hero,” he added. Hawkins was arrested at the scene and faces two counts of pointing a firearm, one count of shooting with intent to kill, and two counts of unlawful carrying.

Americans are drinking coffee at home at levels not seen in more than a decade, as rising prices and remote work reshape daily habits, according to industry data and analysts. Reuters reported on Tuesday that a survey released by the U.S. National Coffee Association found that 85 percent of people who drank coffee the previous day did so at home, the highest share in that category since 2012. The shift marks a reversal from pre-pandemic trends, when consumption at cafes had been rising. Among those who drank coffee outside the home, most said they did so at offices or via drive-through stops, while fewer said they had their caffeine fix at coffee shops. Analysts said hybrid work arrangements and surging prices are driving the shift. Gerd Müller-Pfeiffer, a former Nestlé executive and now an adviser to the coffee industry, said better quality home coffee equipment is also a factor. “Home machines now deliver near out-of-home quality,” he said. On average, U.S. coffee drinkers consume 2.8 cups daily.

President Donald Trump’s top prosecutor in Washington, D.C., has asked a court to throw out the convictions for several members of extremist groups that led the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

A massive 70-vehicle crash shut down part of Interstate 70 in Colorado on Tuesday, leaving eight people hospitalized and dozens more hurt. The chain-reaction pile-up occurred along the eastbound lanes in Clear Creek County, about 50 miles west of Denver, amid snowy conditions. Authorities said 19 people were assessed at the scene, with eight transported to hospitals, including one person reported to have serious injuries. Dramatic images from the scene showed mangled cars and semitrucks piled along the highway, with debris scattered across the road and at least one vehicle left partially suspended off the ground. The crash forced officials to close the eastbound stretch of I-70 for hours as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage and assist those involved. A doctor has been indicted on a manslaughter charge after allegedly removing a patient’s liver instead of his spleen. The patient, 70-year-old William Bryan from Alabama, died on the operating table at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital in Miramar Beach, Florida, after Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky allegedly removed the wrong organ in August 2024. A grand jury has now indicted Shaknovsky on a second-degree manslaughter charge. The doctor, 44, was arrested on Monday morning and later released on bond, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office said. “Our duty is to follow the facts wherever they lead, without fear or favor,” Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson said in a statement. Shaknovsky is due to be arraigned in Walton County Circuit Court on May 19, and he faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. After the botched surgery, Shaknovsky voluntarily surrendered his medical license in Alabama. Authorities in Florida then suspended his medical license. Mr. Bryan’s wife, Beverly, said, “[My husband] would want his death to be the reason that more people didn’t get hurt by that doctor.”

Two prosecutors from U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s D.C. office were turned away from Federal Reserve headquarters after they showed up unannounced to tour the bank’s major renovation project in the capital.

Their Tuesday visit came amid Pirro’s questionable investigation of the $2.5 billion renovation of two Fed buildings, as well as Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s congressional testimony about it last year. Donald Trump has long pressured Powell to lower interest rates and periodically targets him in social media posts and other public commentary.

The Pentagon’s review of having women in ground combat jobs is now being conducted by a different organization—three months after it began.

The Pentagon announced the review in January to determine “operational effectiveness of ground combat units 10 years after the Department lifted all remaining restrictions on women serving in combat roles.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said in a November 2024 podcast appearance that women should not serve in combat roles, backed down in his confirmation hearing by telling senators they would be allowed if they met the same standards as men.

Up until April, the planned six-month review was designated to be carried out by the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA), a Virginia-based non-profit corporation that runs three research and development centers to help with the government’s national security issues. However, Military Times reported that the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory will now lead it. And the deadline, which had been six months from January, has been pushed back to a year from this month.

Plum Sykes, a renowned fashion journalist, took a deep dive into the late queen’s glitzy wardrobe as more than 300 items from her collection are put on display in Buckingham Palace to mark what would have been her centennial year.

The exhibition, dubbed “Her Life in Style,” is on display through October at the King’s Gallery and traces the queen’s life through her most iconic fashion moments. She died at age 96 in 2022.

Rising prices tied to Donald Trump’s costly war in Iran have one Republican senator admitting she’s “worried” about her constituents.

Wyoming Sen. Cynthia Lummis, who was elected in 2020 with Donald Trump’s endorsement, spoke Tuesday about one bad trend in her home state: food insecurity. That problem has played out while the inflation rate tripled from February to March, and the national gas average surpassed $4 per gallon, jumping more than 21 percent over the same period.

“We had record distributions in my county in Wyoming of Meals on Wheels, which is an indication that more and more people are turning...to subsidized food opportunities,” Lummis, 71, told reporters in a video posted by Scott MacFarlane of Meidas Touch.

Hodara says he is an art amateur and a Picasso fan. He found out about the chance to enter the raffle by chance at a restaurant. Though the prize went to a local this year, past winners have come from an ocean away. A Pennsylvania man working at a sprinkler business won Picasso’s Man in the Opera Hat in 2013.

The legislative branch may not know how to get much done these days, but it is certainly expert in choreographing the appearance of progress—especially if you don’t look too closely. Over the past several days, as sexual abuse allegations surrounding Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell have forced him out of the California governor’s race–and, last night, led to his resignation from Congress entirely amid bipartisan threats of expulsion—there has been renewed scrutiny on congressional misconduct. GOP Rep. Tony Gonzales also just announced his resignation on similar grounds.

And members in both parties are openly floating additional expulsion votes for those who refuse to step down—other scandal-plagued congressional figures like Florida Reps. Cory Mills and Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick have come into focus for activities ranging from fraud to revenge porn. Many are throwing around cheesy puns about “cleaning House,” which probably tells you all you need to know about how seriously they’re taking the issue.

Yes, on its face, this moment presents as a reset, a rare moment of cross-party alignment that suggests the deeply unpopular institution may be willing to hold itself accountable. The House of Representatives has expelled just six members in its 237 years of existence. Half of those were in 1861 for supporting or joining the Confederacy. In 1980 and 2002, respectively, Reps. Michael Myers and James Traficant were expelled for bribery-related charges, and in 2023 fraudster George Santos was expelled after being indicted on 23 counts, including money laundering, wire fraud, and stealing public funds. That, all of a sudden, members have been proposing nearly doubling this number in one fell swoop would seem to be an extreme measure. But upon closer inspection, it seems more like a cast of seasoned political players scapegoating a few headline-grabbing bad actors to stem further scrutiny into the body as a whole.
