Michael Pennington, the actor best known in the U.S. for playing Commander Moff Jerjerrod in Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, has died at the age of 82. While the British actor is known to American audiences mostly for his work in Star Wars, he was also an acclaimed Shakespearian thespian. He once turned down a leading role opposite Meryl Streep to play his dream role of tragic Dutch prince Hamlet in Shakespeare’s play of the same name. Despite decades of acclaimed work in the theater in the United Kingdom, including roles opposite Judi Dench and Kenneth Branagh, Pennington said he still received requests for autographs from Star Wars fans who were unaware his career had continued to flourish after the 1983 installment in George Lucas’s blockbuster franchise. “I’ve done 20 years of plays since, and people still write for autographs, saying, ‘If you ever do any more acting, please let us know,’” he said in 2003. Pennington’s death was announced in an obituary published by The Telegraph on Sunday, with no cause of death given.

Authorities have still not found the body of California college student Kristin Smart after searching a home connected to the man convicted of her murder. Testing of soil at Paul Flores’ mother’s home initially signaled that human remains could be at the property, according to officials. Sheriff Ian Parkinson told the media that authorities believed “that based on what we’re looking at evidence-wise, scientific-wise, that a human’s remains were there at one time, or still there.” However, the search was unsuccessful. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office said in a Saturday statement that they “did not recover Kristin Smart” and that “detectives will be evaluating any evidence we have recovered to aid in the investigation.” Smart disappeared in 1996 after a night out with friends while she was a freshman at California Polytechnic State University. The case went cold, and the 19-year-old was declared dead in 2002. Paul Flores—a fellow student at the time and the last person known to have seen her alive—was convicted of her murder in 2022, though he has maintained his innocence throughout the case.

Nine months later, there is still no release date listed on the Trump Mobile website, the venture dreamed up by Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump—even though reportedly almost 600,000 people have already put down a $100 deposit on the phone.

Actor Martin Short has opened up about the devastating emotional toll his daughter’s suicide has had on his family.

Eleven people were hospitalized following a possible boat explosion in Miami, Florida, on Saturday. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Juan Arias told reporters that the victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment of burns and other traumatic injuries, according to the BBC. “We saw three people flying off the boat in a puff of smoke,” Patrick Lee, a South Florida boat captain who saw the explosion, told the Miami Herald. The publication identified the boat as a 40-foot recreational cabin cruiser. According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesperson Erika Benitez, more than 25 units responded to a reported explosion at Haulover Sandbar at around 12:30 p.m., NBC reported. Haulover Sandbar is a shallow area of the bay popular with tourists and jet skiers. “Upon arrival, our crews encountered multiple patients with various degrees of injury,” Benitez said. Officials have not yet provided an official cause for the explosion. The Daily Beast has reached out to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue for further comment.

Passengers aboard the MV Hondius, the cruise ship at the center of the hantavirus outbreak, are finally set to evacuate onto dry land. The 150 passengers, including 17 Americans, will be ferried to the shore of Tenerife, an island off the coast of Spain, and then flown back to their home countries, where they will quarantine and isolate. According to WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the evacuation process will be conducted with serious precautions. Passengers will be taken by authorities “at the industrial port of Granadilla, far from residential areas, in sealed, guarded vehicles, through a completely cordoned-off corridor, and repatriated directly to their home countries,” Ghebreyesus said. The ship has reported eight confirmed cases of the Andes strain rat-borne disease, including three deaths. According to Ghebreyesus, none of those currently on board have shown any symptoms as of Saturday. France has already repatriated five of its citizens on Sunday after they were placed in isolation. One of the individuals developed symptoms, and eight French nationals were in close contact during the flight back to France, but no one has been confirmed to test positive for the virus.

Milwaukee Bucks co-owner and private equity investor Wesley Edens has been revealed as the man at the center of an alleged blackmail and extortion plot.

The saga allegedly began in 2022 when entrepreneur Changli “Sophia” Luo sent a LinkedIn message to Edens, a recently divorced billionaire, the Wall Street Journal reports. The exchange led to a series of meetings, culminating in the pair having sex during their third meetup at Luo’s Manhattan apartment in June 2023.

Prosecutors allege that Luo, 46, tried to extort more than $1 billion from 64-year-old Edens, threatening to release videos and photos of the pair having sex.

The right wing is enraged after a group of protesters swarmed a hotel in Oregon where Kash Patel was rumored to be staying.

A crowd of demonstrators circled the Sentinel in downtown Portland on Saturday night following unconfirmed rumors that the FBI director was staying at the luxury hotel.

It remains unclear whether Patel, 46, was at the establishment, where rooms typically range from $100 to $300 a night. The Daily Beast has reached out to the FBI for comment. Energy Secretary Chris Wright no longer thinks it is “very possible” for gas prices to drop before the start of the summer months.

“I can’t make any predictions,” Wright, 61, told NBC’s Meet the Press host Kristen Welker after she showed the secretary a clip of his March remarks, in which he said there was a “very good chance” gas would fall below $3 by the busy summer travel season.

The Centers for Disease Control is reporting that 115 passengers on a Florida-bound cruise ship have fallen ill with the highly contagious norovirus. As of Thursday, 102 passengers and 13 crew members aboard the 3,116-passenger Caribbean Princess were already stricken, with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and fever. The ship left Port Everglades on April 28 and was scheduled to arrive in Port Canaveral on May 11. Norovirus is the leading cause of food-borne illness in the U.S., according to the CDC. It spreads quickly among sufferers and through contaminated food, water, and surfaces. The ship has increased cleaning and is isolating the infected passengers. U.S. officials are currently tracking returning Americans who were passengers on a Dutch cruise ship where an outbreak of hantavirus killed three people.

I definitely subscribe to the idea that discipline matters more than motivation, but boredom is the natural enemy of consistency, and after years of the same routine, I was starting to lose the battle.

Doctors have been warned to be on the lookout for “imported” hantavirus cases as American passengers return home from a cruise hit by an outbreak of the deadly disease.

New Jersey joined five other states on Friday in announcing it was tracking residents who were onboard the MV Hondius, where eight cases of the illness were confirmed, with three deaths. Seven American passengers left the Dutch cruise ship last month, and 17 more are due to disembark in the Canary Islands on Sunday before being brought home.

A health security expert told the Daily Beast that “anyone that may have gotten off the ship earlier, or who may not be captured with ongoing contact tracing efforts” could potentially have brought the virus back.

A Utah state Supreme Court justice has resigned after she was accused of sending inappropriate text messages to a redistricting lawyer whose case she was presiding over. Justice Diana Hagen stepped down Friday after her ex-husband, Tobin Hagen, filed a complaint accusing her of having an affair with the attorney David Reymann. Reymann had been arguing a congressional redistricting case before the Utah Supreme Court—one Hagen later recused herself from, citing a recently “renewed friendship” with the lawyer. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the Judicial Conduct Commission investigated the allegations against Reymann and Hagen, but ultimately dismissed them as “misleading.” Still, top Utah Republican lawmakers have kept pressure on the justice and her ties to Reymann. In her resignation letter, Hagen acknowledged that public officials face heightened scrutiny but pleaded for privacy surrounding “the painful dissolution” of her marriage of three decades. A plane struck and killed a person at Denver International Airport just hours after President Trump’s transportation secretary revealed he’d been filming a family road trip for months while also ostensibly working to ensure travel safety.

The airport said the person had trespassed onto the runway just two minutes before he was fatally struck by the Frontier Airlines flight. An official told ABC News he was consumed by one of the engines.

“Tower, Frontier 4345, we’re stopping on the runway. Uh, we just hit somebody… we have an engine fire,” air traffic control audio captured the pilot saying. “I do have limbs on the runway. ... There appear to be human remains on the runway.”

Miami cops have sued the production company of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, alleging they were defamed when the 2026 movie The Rip wrongly portrayed them as corrupt.

Jeffrey Epstein’s brother is calling BS on a newly surfaced “suicide note” supposedly written by the disgraced financier before his death in jail.

Mark Epstein said he believes the handwritten note, which was unsealed this week by a federal judge, is a fake designed to prop up the official ruling that his brother died by suicide in his jail cell while awaiting trial in 2019.

“It wouldn’t be hard to get some pro forger to forge a note,” Mark, 71, told Business Insider.

Betty Broderick, who murdered her ex-husband and his wife in 1989, died on Friday, aged 78, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation told TMZ. Broderick, who had been serving a 32-year-to-life sentence at the California Institute for Women, died at an outside medical facility of natural causes, according to CDCR. Broderick’s attorney husband, Daniel, filed for divorce in Sept. 1985, after confessing to having an affair with his assistant, Linda Kolkena, who was 16 years younger than him. Daniel, who was granted custody of their four children, married Linda in April 1989. On Nov. 5 1989, at 5:30 a.m., Betty used a key from her daughter to enter Daniel and Linda’s home, where she shot and killed them both as they slept. Betty was denied parole most recently in January 2017, when she was “defiant, smirked, and in complete denial” during the hearing, according to San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Richard Sachs. Broderick’s story has been retold in several books and TV shows, and in the Netflix series Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story.

Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent company of Truth Social, reported a staggering $405.9 million net loss for the first quarter of 2026 on just $871,200 in revenue, according to earnings released Friday. The company blamed the bloodbath largely on paper losses tied to digital assets and stock compensation. Still, the numbers are eye-popping even by Truth Social standards. Trump Media trades under the ticker DJT, and Trump remains the company’s biggest shareholder, controlling roughly 41 percent through his revocable trust. Despite the ugly results, the company tried to project confidence, touting its “strong balance sheet” while promising more growth for Truth Social, streaming platform Truth+, and fintech venture Truth.Fi. The disastrous quarter also came weeks after former GOP congressman Devin Nunes abruptly stepped down as CEO. Former Hulu and Vevo executive Kevin McGurn is now serving as interim chief executive. Trump Media’s stock has already plunged roughly 35 percent this year. The White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Beast’s request for comment.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is now reportedly preparing to crack down on Americans’ use of antidepressants.

“Psychiatric medications have a role in care, but we will no longer treat them as the default,” Kennedy, who has admitted to a 14-year heroin addiction, warned early this week at a ​Mental Health and Overmedicalization Summit.

Ghislaine Maxwell’s fellow prison inmates are detailing punishments they received after speaking out about the convicted sex trafficker.

Former inmates at the Texas federal prison camp where Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein’s accomplice and one-time girlfriend, is serving out her prison sentence, said they were screamed at and reprimanded for speaking publicly about the special treatment she is receiving, CNN reported.

Authorities have discovered human remains at a home connected to the man who was only recently convicted of murdering California college student Kristin Smart in 1996. Smart disappeared after a night out with friends in Arroyo Grande, California, when she was a 19-year-old freshman at California Polytechnic State University. Her case went cold, and she was officially declared dead in 2002. Her classmate Paul Flores—the last person to see her alive—was eventually charged and convicted of her murder in 2022, but has maintained his innocence from behind bars. Despite the conviction, investigators have continued to push for answers in the case. That culminated in the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office searching the home of Flores’ mother on Wednesday, which they say turned up evidence that suggests human remains were present on the property. “We believe that based on what we’re looking at evidence-wise, scientific-wise, that a human’s remains were there at one time, or still there,” said Sheriff Ian Parkinson. “We can’t call it Kristin, but there’s evidence to support human remains.”

The United States has its weakest global image in years.

That’s according to an annual democracy survey, which found that views of the U.S. have not only declined but have slipped into more negative territory than even its chief geopolitical rivals, Russia and China.

The survey, commissioned by the Alliance of Democracies Foundation, found the U.S. with a net perception score of -16 percent on a scale from -100 to +100, trailing Russia at -11 percent and China at +7 percent.

The 60 Minutes star who clashed with CBS News boss Bari Weiss on a report critical of President Donald Trump will not have her contract renewed, a report alleges.

Sources tell Page Six Hollywood that correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi will be out of a job at the end of May when her contract with the network expires.

Alfonsi clashed with the controversial new editor-in-chief after Weiss claimed her report on the El Salvador prison CECOT was incomplete, in part because it lacked an interview with a Trump official, despite Alfonsi having approached the White House with an invitation to be interviewed.

Melania Trump penned a Washington Post op-ed Friday only for the piece to be savaged in the newspaper’s comments section within minutes of its publication.

The column, timed ahead of Mother’s Day this weekend, casts mothers as “the foundation” of American democracy and the “first teachers of empathy, aspiration and discipline.”

It calls for restoring “the honor of motherhood after years in which feminism often placed career above family, with consequences to our nation,” while urging women to lead boldly at work and to make time for self-care. The piece ends with the first lady reeling off a list of her own initiatives.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio found himself diplomatically threading the needle between the White House and the Vatican.

Rubio, 54, appeared to shrug and give a mocking smile when asked whether he had urged President Donald Trump, 79, to stop criticizing the pope following his “cordial” meeting with the pontiff on Thursday.

“Why would I tell you what I’m gonna recommend to the president?” Rubio said during a press conference on Friday, adding that “the president of the United States is always going to act in what’s in the best interest of the United States.”

A close friend of singer Bonnie Tyler has revealed that the 74-year-old’s appendix burst, forcing doctors in Portugal to perform emergency surgery before placing her in an induced coma. Liberto Mealha, an Algarve businessman and longtime friend of the singer, told Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã that Tyler first began feeling ill during a concert in London, where tests were inconclusive. “She decided to travel to the Algarve, where she began to feel severe abdominal pain,” Mealha said. “Two days later, she went to a private hospital, which urgently transferred her to the hospital in Faro because her appendix had burst and she needed emergency surgery.” Tyler’s spokesman has said the “Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer was placed in an induced coma “to aid her recovery.” Correio da Manhã reported Tyler is suffering from a generalized infection and being treated with high doses of antibiotics following the surgery, adding that her prognosis is “very guarded.” Mealha said Tyler’s husband, Robert Sullivan, 76, has remained by her bedside daily and believes Faro doctors saved her life.

The Late Show host unpacked the war as it entered its 69th day, analyzing its impact on the economy amid skyrocketing fuel prices, which are also hitting McDonald’s.

“We still don’t know how Iran’s response to Trump’s one-page peace offer will be, but we do know the White House is desperate for a deal before the midterms,” Colbert said in his monologue Thursday night. “In a recent poll, more than eight in 10 Americans said struggles at the gas pump are putting strain on their finances.”

Goldie Hawn is finally responding after Meryl Streep, 76, revealed the “beef” that brewed between the pair on the set of the 1992 film Death Becomes Her. While speaking to Vanity Fair, Streep complained that Hawn “was always late to set,” joking that everyone excused it because “everybody thought, ‘Oh she’s so cute.’” That habit, Streep laughed, sparked her “beef” with her co-star. Now Hawn, 80, is owning up to it. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight on Thursday, the actress admitted she is chronically “15 minutes late to everything.” “I mean, honestly, it’s unbelievable,” she said. Still, Hawn insisted there was never really bad blood between them. “It is our joke,” she explained, adding: “She said I was too late on the set. Maybe she’s too early. I don’t know.” Streep also offered her own theory for the delays, recalling that Hawn used to drive herself to set in a red convertible. Despite the on-set frustrations, Streep said the pair eventually became close friends and described filming together as “silly and fabulous.”

Labor Department data shows the share of men participating in the workforce has fallen to a record low. Figures released Friday found that one in three American men was out of the workforce in April, as male-dominated industries continued to shed jobs, baby boomers retired, and younger men increasingly stepped away from work to study or because of illness or disability. “Across the board, when we look at men, we see challenges that they face that leave too many men disconnected,” Betsey Stevenson, a professor of economics at the University of Michigan, told The Washington Post about the trend. The only time the labor force participation rate for U.S. men ages 16 and older was lower was during the opening months of the COVID-19 pandemic. An analysis by The Post of population survey data also found that men outside the workforce were more likely never to have married and more likely to live with their parents. The figures come even as the broader labor market has remained relatively stable, with the unemployment rate holding at 4.3 percent and employers adding 115,000 jobs in April, according to the report.

The Pentagon on Friday began releasing government files related to UFOs and “extraterrestrial life” after Donald Trump vowed to make the files on aliens public.

The first batch released online includes dozens of files, including FBI case files and photos, Defense Department reports on unidentified anomalous phenomena around the globe, and State Department cables. It also includes transcripts and images dating back to the Apollo 12 and 17 missions.

The Pentagon noted that while the “never-before-seen” files had been reviewed for security purposes, the material was not analyzed to resolve any anomalies. It said more files would be released on a rolling basis.

A suspected case of the deadly hantavirus has been identified on a windswept volcanic outpost in the South Atlantic widely considered the most remote inhabited place on Earth.

The U.K. Health Security Agency announced Friday that a resident of Tristan da Cunha, home to just 250 people, is being assessed for infection after passengers from the cruise ship MV Hondius came ashore there in mid-April.

The vessel has since become the focal point of a multi-country outbreak of the rodent-borne disease that has claimed three lives and infected at least eight more. They include the ship’s own physician, who is in intensive care in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Donald Trump’s sons have thrown their weight behind a billion-dollar “war chest” to target industries his administration is pushing to expand.

Eric and Donald Trump Jr. have both committed personal capital to investment vehicles run by a brokerage with offices inside Trump Tower, Dominari Holdings, that has steered roughly $1 billion into smaller publicly traded firms across sectors the White House is actively championing, The Financial Times reports.

Those industries include artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, and drone manufacturing. Two people with knowledge of the arrangement told the newspaper the brothers have backed entities created by American Ventures, an arm of Dominari Holdings, and that they have “anchored” most of the firms’ deals.

Donald Trump’s World Cup chief was forced to defend the event’s sky-high ticket prices after the president himself said he wouldn’t pay that much to attend a match.

Trump, 79, told The New York Post this week that he was surprised to learn that tickets for Team USA’s opening match on June 12 were going for at least $1,000 each.

“I did not know that number,” he told the Post. “I would certainly like to be there, but I wouldn’t pay it either, to be honest with you.”

The Virginia Supreme Court delivered a major setback for Democrats on Friday when it struck down the newly drawn congressional districts meant to help Democrats in the midterms.

Virginia voters approved a referendum to redraw the state’s map just last month in response to Republicans rushing to gerrymander in red states across the country at the behest of President Donald Trump.

But the state’s highest court ruled in a split 4 to 3 decision that focused on a technicality that the process violated Virginia’s Constitution and nullified the new districts. Trump immediately hailed the move as a win for Republicans.
