Abuk resisted the marriage and ran away, wanting to continue her education. Her uncle and her male cousins caught her, dragged her back to their village and beat her for 3 days while keeping her locked inside without food or water. When her aunt tried to help Abuk, she was beaten so badly so remains disabled today. Early marriage is common in Sudan, with girls as young as 12 essentially sold into a life of indentured labour and childbirth. Abuk sees marriage as only good if you have an education and are not suffering from poverty. She says that if you are poor then the man will just treat you like a possesion and you will be abused your whole life. Abuk says "My uncle only sees me as cows." Abuk was eventually rescued by the Ministry of Gender in Bor, but the law in only in its fledgling stages and there are very little means by which to enforce a ban on forced early marriage. There are moves to change this in the legal system in South Sudan but this new country is struggling with many issues and the fact that early marriage is a long established part of the culture is making this transition in thinking very difficult.
