Amy Schumer is so obsessed with the Broadway musical Hamilton that she used it as inspiration for the first full sketch of her Comedy Central show’s fourth season. And she got the musical’s creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda to stop by and give her some advice.
In the new sketch, which will presumably be part of Inside Amy Schumer season four, premiering April 21, Schumer invites Miranda to check out her new hip-hop musical about Betsy Ross. “How difficult is it to write a hip-hopera about historical wig and knee sock people?” she wonders before giving him a taste of her creation.
“How does a woman / Who does / Not know how to sew / Learn to sew and then go on to sew / a flag for her country,” Schumer raps, imitating the cadence of Hamilton’s opening number. Meanwhile, Act Two consists mostly of flag-themed Rihanna and Taylor Swift parodies. Needless to say, Miranda is not impressed—despite an impressive Questlove cameo on drums.
Schumer told Entertainment Weekly that her sister Kim Caramele, who appears in the sketch as Betsy Ross’ nemesis, is the bigger Hamilton fan of the two. “It’s actually a problem,” she said. “She’ll put the soundtrack on at any, sometimes inappropriate time.”
“He said yes and I thought he was kidding,” Caramele added of landing the Miranda guest appearance. “He couldn’t have been nicer and more game. He has so few hours free! I was so grateful he was there.”
As if Hamilton, which is currently sold out for the foreseeable future, needed any more publicity.
