Dozens of students and their professors were taken hostage when gunmen broke into Anbar University in the Iraqi provincial capital Ramadi. Security forces surrounded the university and exchanged fire with the militants, who had planted bombs behind them and were patrolling the roof with sniper rifles. The militants eventualy retreated under gunfire and officials say security forces are now back in control of the campus. A Ramadi hospital says it has received the bodies of two people, one a student and the other a policeman. Parts of Ramadi have been held by anti-government tribal groups and insurgents since the beginning of this year and the university attack is the third offensive in three days by militants.
