New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission unanimously voted Tuesday to designate the Stonewall Inn as a city landmark, making it the first place to be honored for gay-rights history. The Greenwich Village tavern was raided in 1969, when police officers clashed with the patrons inside, leading to several days of protests. “Recognizing and protecting the tremendous historic significance of the Stonewall Inn is incredibly important, long overdue and more than worth the struggle it took to achieve,” said Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society of Historic Preservation.
