President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday criticized House Republicans for voting to gut Congress’s independent ethics watchdog and move it under control of the lawmakers it is meant to watch over. After a public outcry and Trump's tweet, lawmakers pulled the proposal in a closed-door meeting on Tuesday. Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) proposed the initial measure, and Republicans voted in favor of the change Monday night without debate. Trump tweeted: “With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it... may be, their number one act and priority. Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance!” The president-elect ended the tweet with the hashtag #DTS, meaning “Drain the Swamp,” the campaign slogan he has since reportedly backed away from.
