Roy DeCarava had one of the longest and most productive careers in American art photography. He spent most of his life capturing the beauty of subtle moments in the lives of African Americans living in Harlem, but he used his camera as a medium to collect information throughout the city. Originally published in 1955, with text by Langston Hughes,The Sweet Flypaper of Life provides a collection of images that dismantle the misconceptions of the hardships experienced in the Harlem community, and highlights the positive moments and memories that symbolize the heart of the neighborhood.
