An Israeli soldier was fatally stabbed in the West Bank on Sunday during an incident that left two others injured, Reuters reports. The suspect, whom Reuters describes as Palestinian, shot another soldier, as well as a Jewish settler to the occupied territory, before fleeing. The rifle used belong to the soldier who was killed, Reuters notes. It’s unclear whether more than one attacker was involved in the incident. Hamas, an Islamist organization that controls the Gaza Strip, touted the attack as a “natural response to crimes committed by the Israeli occupation.” While Hamas activists allegedly passed out celebratory sweets in southern Gaza, the group did not claim responsibility, per Reuters. The West Bank has been controlled by Israel since the 1967 Middle East War. Palestinians want to establish a state in the region as well as the Gaza strip. Peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians failed in 2014.
