A representative for Mariah Carey on Sunday blamed her disastrous New Year’s Eve performance on technical difficulties. The superstar’s appearance on “Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest” was widely mocked after Carey visibly became frustrated while trying to sing along to a pre-recorded track at Times Square on Saturday night. After lamenting that “we’re missing some of these vocals” during her song “Emotions,” Carey ultimately gave up on singing and began pacing back and forth on the stage, urging the audience to sing instead. “I'm trying to be a good sport here,” she said, before sarcastically calling her own performance “amazing.” By the end of the night, she was only able to successfully perform the first song, “Auld Lang Syne.” Nicole Perna, a spokeswoman for the singer, later released a statement saying the poor performance was not Carey’s fault. “Unfortunately there was nothing she could do to continue with the performance given the circumstances,” Perna said, according to the Associated Press.
