Readers of The New Yorker know already that David Grann is one of the magazine’s boldest and best reporters—his stories cover things like giant squid and Polish murder mysteries. The Lost City of Z, Grann’s first book, covers similarly exotic terrain: It follows the death of British explorer Percy Fawcett in 1925 as he searched for the Lost City of Z. Over the centuries, thousands died in pursuit of Z, which is in the Amazon, and Fawcett’s quest was inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World. As part of his reporting, Grann actually retraces Fawcett’s journey, pursuing Z himself.
