President Donald Trump intends to announce Tuesday afternoon that the U.S. will pull out of the Iran nuclear deal, according to reports. The New York Times reported that Trump told French President Emmanuel Macron that the U.S. would withdraw. The Associated Press reported that the U.S. was going to pull out of the deal. A source told the Times that the U.S. is “preparing to reinstate all sanctions it had waived as part of the nuclear accord—and impose additional economic penalties as well.” Negotiations to keep the U.S. in the deal reportedly “collapsed” after Trump insisted that “hard limits be kept on Iran’s nuclear fuel production after 2030,” contrary to the Iran Deal that lifts such limits. Internal aides had allegedly persuaded the president not to take the step twice last year, but faced “less internal resistance” with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton. Both the White House and Macron's office have reportedly denied the Times story. The move will fulfill one of Trump’s campaign promises, which vowed to undo one of former President Obama’s signature foreign-policy efforts.
