Former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe reportedly wrote in a memo that he feared Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein might have given President Donald Trump “cover” when he fired FBI Director James Comey last year. According to The New York Times, McCabe has given the memo to special counsel Robert Mueller’s team as they continue to investigate whether the president obstructed justice. McCabe reportedly wrote in the memo that in the days after Comey was fired, Rosenstein told McCabe that Trump asked him to mention Russia in his recommendation to fire Comey. But Rosenstein ended up naming Comey’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email server investigation in his memo as a reason to fire him. McCabe reportedly thought that Rosenstein was giving Trump “cover” by mentioning the Clinton probe rather than Russia. McCabe was fired earlier this year for allegedly lying to investigators for an internal probe.
